As a preeminent figure in the Chinese contemporary art world, Ding Yi’s work is rooted in a self-contained and entirely distinctive language of ‘x’s and ‘+’s. Throughout the last three decades Ding has employed this abstract language as a means of examining painting both as a personal form of expression and a channel through which to interpret the ever-evolving socio-political context in contemporary urban China.

This bilingual publication, with a foreword by Timothy Taylor, has been produced to coincide with the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. An essay by London-based critic and journalist Hettie Judah focusses on the seven major new works in the show, while an essay by Berlin-based critic and writer Martin Herbert offers an insightful survey of the development of Ding’s oeuvre over the past thirty years.
